There seems to be a large segment of the female population that doesn't their view their liberation as dependent on men. In many cases those women are lesbians. I say that not to be explosive but as the validation of a truth that many seem unwilling or unable to acknowledge. Significant feminist theory has emanated from lesbian and separatist feminist movements. These movements view the fight for female freedom as one waged on behalf of women and through the engagement of women. I find this approach to be analogous to the Black Nationalist and Black Power movements of the Civil Rights Movements which sought Black liberation through engaging Black folk rather appealing for reform in Whites.
"Funny, I find that the only feminists that I can tolerate are lesbians. They’re not dick-matized and don’t defend the conveniences of patriarchy. They don’t defend their oppression and decry it in the same breath." I wrote that recently as a very visceral reaction to an expression of feminism that I found to be misguided at best and inauthentic at its worst.
Although "dick-matized" has a certain punch, a more nuanced and generous explanation of that sentiment is to say that there is something to be learned from the lesbian and separatist feminist movements. Because their goals are not compromised by a dependence on benevolent sexism or preoccupation with the faults of men, the means by which they operate are straightforward and with outstanding consideration for the ends. What I really meant to say is that some people are just playing with feminism. They see it as a tool to assault patriarchy and men in general. I find that without mixed motives, many lesbians have gotten past the assault mentality of the struggle and are moving into their freedom with or without men in tow.
