7 | A system called oppression

“I don’t a have a lot of confidence in rules and policies, that they are useful and that people in authority should be trusted,” Overton said. “It’s not because people who come into education are awful. It’s because I think there are so many restrictions because of how young people are treated and viewed in society - and really disrespected.” She said that growing up in a household with a strict father was particularly hard. “Everything was like we had no choice because that’s the way it was. That seemed unfair to me but I never attached it to a system called oppression until I was much older.”
